Planning for Spiritual Necessities: Bible Reading Plans for 2012

Statistics show that most Christians who admit faith in Jesus have never totally read their Bible.

“PRINCETON, NJ –According Gallup poll,         (October 2000) about six in ten Americans (59%) say they read the Bible at least on occasion, with the most likely readers being women, nonwhites, older people, Republicans, and political conservatives. Readership of the Bible has declined from the 1980s overall, from 73% to 59% today. And the percentage of frequent readers, that is, those who read the Bible at least once a week, has decreased slightly over the last decade, from 40% in 1990 to 37% today. About one American in seven reports an involvement that goes beyond reading the Bible. Fourteen percent currently belong to a Bible study group. In terms of frequency of readership, 16% of Americans say that they read the Bible every day, 21% say they read it weekly, 12% say they read the Bible monthly, 10% say less than monthly and 41% say that they rarely or never read the Bible. A lot of people begin reading the Bible, but then turn out to be weighed down by the number of chapters (1,189) and verses (31,102).
What we don't realize is that we can read the Bible in a year by reading fewer than four chapters a day.
If we divide the Bible into 365 daily readings, we can set a goal of reading the Bible in a year and it can be achieved without difficulty.
My husband works around a one hour drive away from our home.
He has an app on his iPhone so that he can listen to the Bible for two hours a day. He is able to go through the Bible, three times a year. The reading is dramatized, so there are different voices to play the different people of the Bible.

Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.

There are many ways to read the Bible in a year, and I won’t try to capture all of them. But here are numerous options in no particular order. You may want to look through to see what you think would work best for you.

These are the different types of Bible plans accordingly:

Historical: order from the first events to the last. Each line represents a day's reading

Biographical Highlights: from Adam to Zechariah, the return of this approach includes ease in seeing the story of the Bible and becoming familiar with the whole Who's Who” of the Bible.

Chronological: order, which is worked out in date order, as the books were written.

From Genesis to Revelations: every book from Genesis to Revelation

Just New Testament: read the New Testament only in 26 weeks

Just Old Testament: read the Old Testament in 26 weeks

One chapter each of Old and New Testament: Read alternative form both Testaments.

Planning for Spiritual Necessities

“All of us know this and practice it in relation to the basic physical necessities of life. We take steps to see that we have enough to eat and clothes to keep us warm. But do we take our spiritual needs that seriously? Do we apply the same earnestness in planning to maximize our ministry as we do in planning to make a living?
What I would like to do here is to try to persuade you to set aside time each week in the coming year to plan—and specifically to plan your life of prayer and devotion and ministry. The bulldozer of God's Spirit often arrives at the scene of our heart ready to begin some great work of building, and he finds that due to poor planning there are piles of disordered things in his way. We're not ready for him.” A New Year's Plea: Plan! John Piper 1984
